Biosecurity Survey

Funded by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
The Coalition recently completed a Benchmark Assessment (February 2006) to determine the degree to which biosecurity has been developed and implemented by all sectors of the Canadian food animal industry.
Current Status
“The Presence and Compliance of Biosecurity Protocols in Canada: A National Benchmark Assessment of Biosecurity in Canada’s Food Animal Industry” provided the following observations:
  • Biosecurity is currently incorporated and delivered in the Canadian food animal industry, albeit in varying degrees and often from a food safety perspective
  • The standardization of protocols is highest in national programs where there is a consistent level of regional participation
  • There are several independent biosecurity initiatives that are not aligned with each other
  • There is recognition by several industry organizations and governments that there is a compelling need for consistent and specific biosecurity standards
  • Currently, Biosecurity compliance measurement and enforcement criteria exist in only a few applications
  • Producers are developing best practices that go beyond standard operating protocols but these are not being followed universally

Going Forward

  • Biosecurity and the integration of national standards, is a core element of the National Farmed Animal Health Strategy
  • Biosecurity is integrally linked to other Coalition initiatives including Zoning, Emergency Management and Financial Risk Management
  • Since the Report was released, there have been significant advancements in the poultry sector. Biosecurity will likely be the focus of future discussions between government and all
